RIP Les Paul
Well, I doubt I need to mention it, but today is a sad day due to the passing of Les Paul. I recently watched the Les Paul documentary Les Paul: Chasing Sound and I was absolutely amazed by what he had accomplished musically and technologically. I remember when I was a kid I use to think ※why is there a guitar named after Les Paul# who the hell is he?§ Of course at the time Def Leppard*s Phil Collen was my idol and if you didn*t have big hair you didn*t exist. But take one look at this documentary and you*ll see why not only was a guitar named after him, the greatest guitar ever made was named after him (there*s a reason I chose a Les Paul for my logo at the top of the page).
Ever since I was a kid, a Gibson Les Paul guitar was pretty much THE guitar I wanted (Ok, the Ibanez DT555 that Phil Collen used was right up there too). Even though I bought other guitars before it, it was still the guitar I really wanted. It took a while for me to get one because I didn*t want just any Les Paul, I wanted a great Les Paul. I think I finally got my dream Les Paul in my 1957 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue.
Head over to the Gibson website where they have a great memorial of Les Paul. Imagine what just about any of your favorite guitarists would look and sound like if it wasn*t for Les Paul.
RIP Mr. Paul.
**UPDATE**
Here*s a great blog article on the origin of the Les Paul guitar.

Les Paul was a genius and will be greatly missed. I love the fact he played guitar in his 90s. I love the fact that he was a fantastic musician, yet he had a mind for electronics and mechanics. I love the fact that he was always searching and more importantly, always learning.
What a great man. We will miss you Les Paul!

Thanks for the heads up on this. I wasn*t aware of his passing. Sounds like he had a pretty good long life.
Reminds me of the scene in Juno where they guy has a Les Paul and she has a Harmony.
I love the name of your blog, I*m 43 and have just started learning guitar. I bought a beautiful red Squire by Fender (acoustic) at a garage sale for $75 that has wonderful sound. (Also a Harmony 3/4 for the kids to mess around with. $25) I*m pretty impressed with myself and how I*ve gotten my fingers to move. Not that anyone else would be impressed, but it*s been a lot of fun and something I*ve always wanted to do but never thought I had the talent.
I*ve added your blog to my bloglines reader.
