Since I*ve been posting about buying my guitars lately I might as well round it out with what has been my favorite guitar to date (although the Les Paul I bought last weekend is nipping at its heals for that title)
I wasn*t planning on buying a new guitar (I think all my guitar purchasing stories start that way). At the time I already had two guitars (a Gretsch 5120 and Rickenbacker 330) and as I*ve said before, one guitar is more than enough for a beginner, let a lone two# let alone three (and let alone four now)!
But, I love guitars and had recently heard about Rockers Guitar in San Francisco so I thought I*d check them out. It turns out they were having a really good sale because they are trying to get rid of all their inventory so they can focus on making guitars rather than selling other manufacturer*s guitars.
The list of guitars I want is endless and their stock seemed to be endless as well. But, the guitar I fell in love with was a Gibson ES-175SP.

The guitar that really pushed me to start taking lessons was my Rickenbacker 330. I*ve wanted this guitar for a while but I honestly hadn*t even thought about it in a long time and I certainly don*t have a need for a new guitar (I think one is enough for most beginners). But, I love guitars and if I could, I*d have a room full of them. Combine that with a history of impulse buying and I quickly became the owner of a new Rickenbacker 330.
I called all the local shops to see if they had one in stock.Only Haight Ashbury Music Center had one, so I headed over to check it out. It was beautiful. I knew once I saw the Fireglow 330 I would be buying it (like I said, impulse buyer). It felt great to play as well, so I bought it.
A couple months after buying it I thought about taking it in to get setup at San Francisco Guitarworks. I had been reading that typically all guitars need a good setup. My initial thought was to not take the Rickenbacker in. After all, they are hand made and inspected before they leave the factory. I would assume that means it should have a pretty good setup already. But, I decided to take it in to anyway at the same time I took in my Gretsch 5120 (which I expected would really need a good setup since it*s a less expensive guitar).

I watched a cool documentary last night called ※Stars & Their Guitars.§ It*s a great look at the history of the guitar and the guitarists who play them. The focus was on Gibson, Fender, Rickenbacker and Gretsch. The documentary wasn*t just about the guitars, there was a lot of great insight into playing buy some impressive players as well. Check it out if you haven*t already.
